Henbury and Brentry Community Council and Centre

Let's hear from Wonderful Wendy!

This May in our quarterly news we also hear from Wendy Baverstock.

Henbury Community Centre joined Can Do Bristol as the Covid restrictions began in March 2020 and found Can Do helpful for recruiting volunteers to help shielding people. 

They are currently recruiting for volunteers to help with food collection and distribution:

During Volunteers week, June 2023, Wendy (a volunteer herself) plans to hold a small event with food to thank everyone for their contribution.

Hillfields Library Welcoming Space

In our May 2023 newsletter we hear from Sarah Rogers.

Friends of Hillfields Library Co-Founder and Project Manager for the Hillfields Library Welcome Space.

Sarah coordinated the Welcome Space in Hillfields Library including recruiting and working with volunteers and setup and management of free food provision.

At the first Welcome Space session in December 2022 the space had one volunteer - by the end they had 12 volunteers, each turning up every week. 

They had a celebration in April 2023 and you can read more about it including heartwarming messages of thanks from the Welcoming Space visitors.

#CanDoStories Citizens Advice Bureau Cost Of Living Response

This Autumn we hear more from Kirsten Kerr from Citizens Advice Bristol who explained how Citizens Advice are working with  

Snippet of story 

Citizens Advice, as a network of independent charities, is currently helping more than two people every minute with access to crisis support like food bank referrals and charitable grants. More than 137,000 people have been referred for this type of support - an 50% increase on the same period last year, and a 167% increase on the same period in 2019.”

May 2022

Volunteer co-ordinator Sarah Mountford from Hartcliffe City Farm & Windmill Hill spoke to us about her work with the project, her learning from the pandemic and how she has utilised Can Do Bristol volunteers. 

Hartcliffe Farm is re-opening June 2022 and the project aims to become a local hub where people can visit, learn, work and volunteer.
