If you're someone who’s always asking questions and looking to dig a little deeper, you might enjoy joining our team of volunteer researchers at Glenside Hospital Museum.
Our research volunteers help uncover hidden stories behind the objects in our collection. Whether it’s identifying a mysterious artefact, tracing its origins, or exploring how it was used, your curiosity can help enrich the museum’s interpretation of mental health care over time.
There’s nothing more satisfying than being handed a curious, unlabeled object and piecing together its story—often revealing unexpected insights into the lives of those who lived and worked at Glenside.
The museum is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays, so volunteer shifts typically take place on those days and usually last around 2-4 hours. While we can be flexible, we generally ask volunteers to commit to a couple of days each month. Research work can be done in the museum, or from home depending on the subject. It would be helpful if you had access to a laptop, especially for research and documentation tasks.
