Purpose of the role
'Welcoming Spaces' will provide a warm, welcoming space for families struggling in the face of the current financial crisis. They will be invited to our John James Room at the Farm for activities and a hot shared family meal.
We are looking for volunteers to work alongside our staff to welcome families so that they and their children feel comfortable, supported and included in the sessions.
Commitment (Days and Times)
Every Tuesday, 5pm - 8.30pm End of Nov- March
8 weeks minimum commitment but ideally available for all 15 sessions
Main activities/ tasks:
- To assist the session leader to organise and run the session.
- To meet and greet families into the sessions.
- To engage in informal conversation and listen to parents providing emotional support where appropriate.
- To create a comfortable and safe environment.
- Participate in a range of activities e.g. children’s craft, reading stories, cooking alongside families and staff.
- To help clearing setting up and clearing away after sessions e.g., washing up.
Skills, Experience and Qualities You Need:
- Good communication and active listening skills
- Ability to relate to families
- Non-judgemental attitude and keen to support people from all backgrounds
- Some experience of working with children and families
- A friendly, welcoming and inclusive approach.
- Ability to work effectively as a member of a team.
- An understanding of confidentiality
This is an ideal role for someone who would like to develop their experience of working with vulnerable families in an informal setting.
Support and training:
We will offer you:
- Initial induction
- An enhanced DBS
- Regular supervision, support and training where appropriate to develop your skills necessary for sessions
- Volunteer meetings with the opportunity to socialise with fellow volunteers and discuss project development
The role will provide you with the opportunity to give something to the community and develop the valuable work of the Farm.
