Can you spare a morning or afternoon each week to support a regular user of Warmley Wheelers cycling project to attend?
Milestones Trust is a health and social care charity which supports people with learning disabilities, mental health needs and people living with dementia. The services are provided through a network of residential and nursing care homes and community services throughout the Bristol and South Gloucestershire areas.
We run a community cycling project called Warmley Wheelers, on the Bristol to Bath cycle path in Warmley, South Gloucestershire. The project supports people Milestones supports and the general public to cycle, using accessible bicycles. We are looking for a volunteer to support one of the regular users of the project to attend. The individual is deaf and uses British Sign Language to communicate and is a wheelchair user. She is looking for someone to help her communicate with staff through British Sign Language interpretation and also to enjoy either cycling together (on separate bikes) and/or to get a drink and cake together in the next door café after cycling. The individual is very independent and the volunteer won’t be asked to support them in and out of the wheelchair or bike.
We are looking for a volunteer who is:
- A proficient user of British Sign Language
- Reliable
- A good communicator
- Has a knowledge of or interest in deaf culture and disability issues
- Has an interest in current affairs (not essential)
As a requirement of becoming a Milestones Trust volunteer, you will attend a half day training session, covering all aspects of volunteering and safeguarding. You will also have a site induction at Warmley Wheelers and the Project Coordinator will ensure you are confident before starting the role.
The project is based in Warmley, South Gloucester- we can provide travel expenses.
Please note due to the nature of the role a DBS check and references will be carried out.
If this sounds like something you would like to get involved in we would love to hear from you.
