We create permanent woodland in the Avon River catchment to tackle the climate and nature crises. Our woodlands are planting by volunteers.
The west of England has only 8% woodland cover compared with an average of 13% in England and 38% across Europe. So Avon really does needtrees.
Avon Needs Trees was set up in 2019 and is now an established charity with four woodland sites and three more in the pipeline. It has 13 members of staff, and an experienced board of trustees.
Great Avon Wood is a ground-breaking partnership between Avon Needs Trees and the Forest of Avon Trust.
We have jointly purchased over 100 acres of land just two miles south of Whitchurch, Bristol. Our amazing volunteers are helping us to plant and care for 40,000 trees. Great Avon Wood is the largest woodland creation project on record for the West of England.
Our working model is to buy the land where we planting woodlands thereby ensuring that the trees we plant are there in perpetuity.
We rely on hundreds of amazing volunteers to come and plant trees with us. It's satisfying work in the fresh air with an amazing group of people. Come and join our growing community! There are opportunities to plant trees from December to March and then tree care days in the summer where you can help us make sure our young trees get established.
