My name is Deya and I am a 30 year old mother to a busy toddler and I work at the BBC natural history unit helping to bring the wonders of the natural world to a wider audience. I care deeply about conserving our nature and green spaces and making access to the outdoors accessible to everyone. From a young age I have volunteered in a fair few different ways and worked with children - mainly being reading buddies on my lunch break at Willow Park Primary school, or helping at events with children with disabilities whilst I was at school.I have also been part of GoodGym in Bristol helping on tasks in allotments or supporting elderly people. I feel that we are custodians of the nature we live by and it feels very important to try protect, conserve it in any way big or small. I want to set a good example to my son to see this as he grows. My husband and I set up a weekly litter pick in our community (Greenbank) which has brought neighbours together of all ages in such a fantastic way. My colleagues often see me as someone to come to relation to things with apes and within Indonesia as I used to live in Indonesian Borneo working with orangutans and whilst there learnt the language. A lot of the series I work on are linked to this in some way! I have always enjoyed spending time with children and babies, likely linked to having lots of younger siblings. I worked in a Montessori nursery after leaving school and nannied through my teens and 20’s culminating now being a mother. One of the reasons I want to connect with a can Do Bristol is that I feel it is so important to be part of a community, and to give something back. It was a little tricky to volunteer whilst my son was young, but now I feel there are more windows of time to help some way that I can. I learnt so much from my grandparents and always found the connection between different generations so precious. I would love to help in any way that I can to connect people to each other or to nature, combat loneliness, be an ear to listen or help someone gain confidence in something - whatever their age.
