Community support worker for deaf adults with additional needs
I’d like to be a reading volunteer due to enjoying my experience in a similar volunteer role at at Bristol school in 2012, while also being interested in teaching assisting as a future line of work.
There are a number of skills I could bring to the work from my current role as a community support worker with the RNID in which I support deaf adults with additional needs on a one to one basis with everyday challenges.
These skills include the ability to adapt my mode of communication to the individual person’s needs, helping a person to develop confidence in their own ability without them feeling hesitant to ask for help or advice, as well as logging a person’s progress with an activity over time for this to be communicated with colleagues.
I also greatly value the opportunity of education. As a university graduate from an arts background who is currently returning to A-Levels in scientific subjects that I’d previously lacked confidence in, I know from personal experience how education that is accessible, personalised and enjoyable can be greatly supportive to confidence in learning. Additionally, I’d appreciate the opportunity to support young people at this time due to the unprecedented disruption to their education they’ve faced from the covid-19 pandemic.
