An Opportunity for Young People in Bristol: Supporting a New Service for Young People Facing Homelessness and Housing Insecurity.

We are expanding our Youth Board – find out what we are doing and if you could be involved in our project.

Youth Board Information and Role Description.

Is this opportunity for you?

Are you a young adult (18-25) who wants to help shape the landscape for young people facing housing insecurity in Bristol?

Do you have a passion for helping others and want to help shape a brand-new service in Bristol?

Do you have any life experience of housing insecurity?

If the answer to any of these questions is “yes” and you have time to volunteer,  please read on!

Who are we? What are we doing?

We are a group of young adults looking to find other young adults interested in joining our Youth Board at Caring in Bristol – a charity that supports people at risk of or experiencing homelessness in creative ways.

We meet regularly in the centre of Bristol and we are working towards co-producing a new type of emergency housing provision. It will serve young adults that are at risk of housing insecurity and homelessness.

We are doing this by coming together and sharing ideas and recognise wider social issues that affect young people and housing. We discuss solutions in a creative and positive space.

Our priority is to cultivate a Youth Board where all members feel respected, valued, and comfortable expressing themselves.

The new emergency provision is a night shelter, called The Z House, which is opening to assist young people who are insecurely housed in Bristol. It will be an emergency provision for 18–25-year-olds with low support needs. As a member of the Youth Board, you will be a vital part in the co-production of this provision and influential in how we shape this service to best meet the needs of guests who stay.

Role Description:

This sets out what is involved for members of the Youth Board.

Time commitment

We meet once every three weeks, usually at the Caring in Bristol office located in St Pauls in the city centre. You will be expected to attend 80% of all meetings that are organised by the Youth Board to help it function properly.

What does the role involve?

  • Engaging with people who use Project Z (Caring in Bristol’s youth project) and guests at our new emergency night shelter, the Z House.
  • Engaging with our volunteers to assist in shaping the provision that is offered to young people who are insecurely housed in Bristol through our current projects.
  • Attending regular meetings with other youth board members, volunteers, staff, and people who use our services.
  • Sharing your ideas of how Caring in Bristol could improve to develop the way we work with young people, including guests at the Z House night shelter.
  • Applying creative problem-solving techniques to fill any gaps in provision that is offered to the young people we work with.
  • Undertaking work you have agreed to outside of meetings.
  • Representing and being a voice of young people who are experiencing homelessness in Bristol.

Who are the Youth Board looking for?

  • Young people with life experience that involve housing insecurity or homelessness. We value this experience and knowledge as being powerful and influential.
  • Young people who are empathetic to the challenges of housing insecurity.
  • Young people committed to promoting diversity, inclusion, and anti-oppressive action.
  • Young People who are passionate about creating real change for other young people who are experiencing homelessness in Bristol.
  • Young people willing to think creatively to develop new ideas and solutions to help the services at Caring in Bristol to develop.
