Commitment: Flexible, to be agreed with the Visitor Services team. The times outlined below are our tour times. If you would like to apply for the role but are unable to do Fridays or Saturdays, other days and times can be arranged by the Visitor Services Team. The role is designed to be flexible so volunteers can sign up for the shifts they would like, making this role available for those interested in weekly, fortnightly or monthly volunteering.
About St Mary Redcliffe
St Mary Redcliffe Church is one of Bristol’s most iconic landmarks — a magnificent medieval church with over 800 years of history, stunning architecture, and countless stories woven through its walls.
Each year, we welcome around 50,000 visitors from all over the world who come to explore its
beauty, spirituality, and heritage.
We’re building a team of warm, enthusiastic volunteers to help make every visit a memorable experience — and we’d love you to be part of it!
The role
As a Welcomer and Guide, you’ll be one of the friendly faces that make visitors feel at home from
the moment they step inside. You’ll help people discover the rich history of St Mary Redcliffe, share fascinating stories about its past and present, and contribute to the welcoming atmosphere that makes this church so special.
What you’ll be doing
• Welcoming visitors with a smile and offering a friendly first point of contact.
• Helping and directing people around the church and its facilities.
• Sharing stories and information about the church’s history, architecture, and community life.
• Leading guided tours for pre-booked groups (training and support provided).
• Encouraging donations and promoting the Gift Aid scheme to support the church’s work.
• Assisting with ticket sales for tours and special events when needed.
We’re looking for someone who is:
• Warm, approachable, and enjoys meeting people from all walks of life.
• Friendly and well-presented, with a welcoming manner.
• Reliable and enthusiastic, with a positive, can-do attitude.
• Confident using initiative and comfortable working independently.
• Interested in the history and heritage of St Mary Redcliffe (no prior knowledge needed — we’ll
help you learn!).
• Open to learning new systems and technology, such as digital tills or booking systems.
