Can you spare a morning or afternoon each week to support people to experience cycling using our accessible bicycles?
Milestones Trust is a health and social care charity which supports people with learning disabilities, mental health needs and people living with dementia. The services are provided through a network of residential and nursing care homes and community services throughout the Bristol and South Gloucestershire areas.
We run a community cycling project called Warmley Wheelers, on the Bristol to Bath cycle path in Warmley, South Gloucestershire.
The project supports people Milestones supports, and the general public, to cycle using accessible bicycles.
We are looking for volunteers to come and support people to have a go on the accessible bikes in a variety of roles. We are looking for people to support in a wide variety of roles such as:
- Cycle Pilots for larger bikes
- Cycle Buddies: acting as a guide or general support
- Cycle Rangers: checking on riders and responding to breakdowns
- General duties: helping with opening / closing centre; some basic bike maintenance
We are looking for volunteers who are:
- Interested in cycling and confident enough to ride with themselves and another on our accessible bikes
- Reasonably fit
- Reliable
- Have a good sense of humour
- Encouraging and motivating
- Experience of supporting people with additional needs would be helpful but not essential
As a requirement of becoming a Milestones Trust volunteer, you will attend a half day training session, covering all aspects of volunteering and safeguarding. You will also have a site induction at Warmley Wheelers and the Project Coordinator will ensure you are confident with riding the bikes before you cycle with a passenger.
The project is based in Warmley, South Gloucester- we can provide travel expenses.
Please note due to the nature of the role a DBS check and references will be carried out.
If this sounds like something you would like to get involved in we would love to hear from you.
