Bristol Hospitality Network runs a drop-in ‘Welcome Centre’ every Monday for asylum seekers and those with immigration issues. The drop-in is a welcoming space where our members can access immigration advice, learn new skills and get a hot meal.

As part of this we offer free haircuts for men.

Can you help?

We are seeking a dedicated, committed barber to join our team at the Volunteer drop-in in Easton, Bristol. You will have the opportunity to showcase and practice your skills while providing top-notch grooming services to our members. A good haircut makes people feel renewed and fresh - you will be truly giving something back to the community!

9.30am - 12.30pm on Mondays (you are welcome to stay for lunch at 1pm and the volunteer debrief at 1.45pm)

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Performing barbering services including haircuts and skinfades
  • Consulting with clients as best you can across language barriers to understand their grooming preferences
  • Maintaining and organising the queue for haircuts, in line with BHN principles of fairness & equity
  • Maintaining cleanliness and organization of the work area, including sanitizing tools and equipment and tidying up the area after use
  • Attending our volunteer training to understand BHN’s values, approach to Diversity & Inclusion and the boundaries that we ask our Volunteers to uphold at the Drop-in Space
  • Cooperating with the Drop-in Coordinator and Volunteer Co-ordinator to support the smooth running of the Welcome Centre

Requirements:

  • Proven experience as a barber
  • Strong proficiency in a wide range of barbering techniques, including clipper cuts and fades
  • Exceptional customer service skills with the ability to engage and communicate effectively with people from a range of backgrounds, who speak different languages and have varying levels of English
  • Demonstrated ability to work well within a team and contribute to a positive and energetic work environment.
  • Commitment to creating an environment free of discrimination where people are treated fairly regardless of their country of origin, refugee status, ethnicity, religious background, sexuality or gender.
