The Gane Trust is looking for new Trustees to help shape our next chapter.
We welcome people with a wide range of skills and experiences, and are especially keen to
hear from someone with financial expertise who could take on the role of Treasurer.
We are also looking for people who bring knowledge or passion for the arts, design, social
care, digital communication, or charity governance and legal matters. If you care about
supporting creativity and social wellbeing in the South West, we’d love to hear from you.

About Us

Founded in 1954 by furniture designer and manufacturer Crofton Gane, the Gane Trust supports
people in the arts, craft, design, welfare, and social care. We offer grants and fund travel award
schemes for students in higher education.
In an ongoing commitment to furthering Crofton Gane’s social vision the ambition of the Gane Trust is
to invest in people to develop their creative talent, foster innovation and improve the quality of life of
people requiring social care, enabling them to progress in their aspirations.
We’re based in Bristol and focus on supporting people in the South West of England including Bath,
North Somerset, and South Gloucestershire.

Trustee Role

Being a Trustee means helping guide the Trust’s work and making sure our support reaches the right
people. You’ll:

  • Review grant applications and help decide who receives funding (3 meetings a year).
You will work with fellow trustees to ensure that grant allocations are fair and fit with our
eligibility criteria, policies and strategic objectives. Trustees can attend in person or online,
though we aim to convene as many people in person as possible for the grant application
    reviews.
  • Join strategy sessions to shape the Trust’s future (3 online meetings a year).
As a trustee, you’ll help guide the Trust’s legal and strategic decisions through strategy sessions.
You may also contribute to research, planning, and responses to major events affecting artists,
designers, and those in social care (for instance, the 2020-23 COVID-19 pandemic).
  • Support the development of the Trust to ensure it meets it aims                                                    Share your skills and experience, taking on tasks outside of the meetings to help the Trust meet it’s mission. In the past this has included development of policies, recruitment of trustees, supporting the development of the trusts website and supporting our grants and awards programme with partner universities and colleges.
  • Be an ambassador - share our mission and represent us at events.

Who We Are Looking For

We welcome people from all backgrounds, especially those with experience or interest in:

Finance/accounting
Legal and governance
Digital marketing and social media
Craft and design
Social care or nursing

You don’t need to be an expert in everything, we value fresh perspectives, lived experience, and a
willingness to learn.

We’re looking for Trustees who are:

  • Committed to our mission and values
  • Team players who enjoy collaboration
  • Creative thinkers with a flexible approach
  • Confident sharing ideas and perspectives
  • Connected to communities we aim to support

You might have experience in:

  • Charity finance or legal matters
  • Arts or design education/artist development
  • Running or working in charities or community organisations
  • Social care or welfare services
  • Digital communication or website management

We particularly welcome applications from candidates from Global Majority backgrounds, younger
people and people who are Disabled (as defined by the Equalities Act 2010) as these backgrounds
are currently underrepresented at the Gane Trust.

We believe diversity strengthens our work and welcome individuals as their whole selves. Trustees
are appointed for their unique experiences, skills, and perspectives - not to represent any specific
background or group.

Application Process
Complete a simple application form where we ask you share with us why you wish to join the Gane
Trust and how you think your Experience, Skills and Qualifications will be of value to the Trust.
If you are successful at this stage, then we will invite you to an interview with members of the board
of trustees.

We welcome questions from potential trustees and can organise a phone call with a current trustee
to talk more about the role.
