Job Title: Peer Mentor

Responsible to: Peer Coordinator

Location: Bristol (community-based role)

Commitment: Flexible – ideally 1–2 days per week

Who Can Apply

Have you been through recovery and want to give something back? We’re looking for people who want to support others while also developing their own skills and confidence.

This role is open to anyone with lived experience of recovery from substance use who:

· Has been abstinent for at least 6 months

· Feels they are in a stable place in their own recovery

· Is ready to support people in the early stages of recovery

You don’t need qualifications or previous experience — we’ll provide full training and ongoing support to help you succeed.

Ara Recovery for All is launching a Peer Academy, and we’re looking for Volunteer Peer Mentors to join our team. This is a chance to make a real difference while working on your own personal and professional growth.

What You’ll Do

· Support people 1:1, offering encouragement and understanding

· Help clients set goals and build confidence

· Share practical skills, like budgeting, cooking, or using digital tools

· Optionally co-facilitate group sessions and activities

· Be a positive role model and show that recovery is possible

· Always work safely and keep professional boundaries

What You’ll Gain

· Free training through our Peer Academy

· Ongoing supervision and mentoring

· Opportunities to gain Level 2 qualifications and apprenticeships

· Employment coaching and support with career pathways

· Experience working with others and developing key skills

· A chance to be part of a supportive community

Who We’re Looking For

You don’t need previous experience or qualifications — just:

· Lived experience of recovery (substance use, mental health, or housing challenges)

· Empathy, reliability, and a non-judgemental attitude

· Willingness to learn, attend training, and work as part of a team

· Commitment to boundaries, safeguarding, and confidentiality

Training

All Peer Mentors complete Phase 1 Training — a 6-week programme (two half-days per week) covering safeguarding, boundaries, group work, and supporting others safely.

After this, you can begin mentoring with supervision and, if you want, move on to Phase 2 for further development with accredited qualifications, apprenticeships, and career coaching.
