Why volunteer with St Peter’s?

St Peter’s Hospice is a local charity which provides care and support for those living with a progressive life-limiting illness and their families in the Bristol, South Gloucestershire, and North Somerset area both at the Hospice and in the community. Our charity shops raise around £3,000,000 per year which goes directly towards providing vital patient care and support services; as a retail shop volunteer you will play an important part in raising this incredible amount.

What will my role include?

  • Welcome and assist our customers, donors and other visitors to the shop in a polite and professional manner.
  • Assist customers with purchases – product selection and information, using the till, taking payment and packing goods.
  • Supporting fundraising initiatives, including the promotion of the St Peter’s Lottery
  • Receive donations and thank donors. Take donor gift aid details or encourage new donors to sign up to the Gift Aid scheme.
  • Create interesting, visually attractive and sellable displays, considering current trends, season and particular promotions.
  • To assist with administration tasks including completing paperwork and computer research.

What qualities do I need?

As a Volunteer Shop Team Member you will be an ambassador for St Peter’s Hospice. We will need you to have, or be very keen to work towards the following:

  • Well presented, friendly and polite in a variety of situations.
  • Prepared to work as part of a team.
  • Prepared to handle a variety of goods in a busy working environment.
  • Good listening and communication skills.
  • Enthusiastic, reliable and committed.
  • Open to learning, know your own limits of skills, competences and responsibilities and work within them and know when to ask for help.
  • This role includes periods of standing, moving items, using stairs and equipment.  We do not want this aspect to exclude or prevent anyone from volunteering with us so please discuss your mobility with the shop manager at application.

How much time do I need to commit?

We would ideally be looking for a minimum of 2-3 hours per week, but the role can be flexible around your lectures and other commitments; we can work together to find a time which best fits in with your lifestyle.

What are the benefits of volunteering with St Peter’s Hospice?

There are plenty of benefits to volunteering with us these include:

  • Experience working in a team and independently within a charity retail setting

  • Building links with your local Bristol community

  • The satisfaction of knowing the time you are giving means the hospice teams can continue to be there for our patients and their families when they need us most

  • The chance to build upon a passion for antiques, fashion, books, and music among other interests (there are all sorts of things donated to our shops!)

  • St Peter’s Hospice is a well established and respected charity in the Bristol area; it can be a real boost to a CV when applying for jobs in and around the city
