Why volunteer with St Peter’s?

St Peter’s Hospice is a local charity which provides care and support for those living with a progressive life-limiting illness and their families in the Bristol, South Gloucestershire, and North Somerset area both at the Hospice and in the community. Our charity shops raise around £3,000,000 per year which goes directly towards providing vital patient care and support services; as a retail shop volunteer you will play an important part in raising this incredible amount.

What will my role include?

  • Preparing furniture items for sale, including the assembly of flat packed furniture.
  • Assist in the dismantling of furniture items for delivery/storage.
  • Developing your knowledge of the value of furniture items by using the internet and other sources
  • Make sure essential paperwork is processed correctly, such as Gift-Aid and invoices for new goods.
  • Assist with set up and maintenance of room sets & other merchandised areas within the shop floor.
  • Assist the Driver team to unload furniture deliveries to the shop floor.
  • Participate in any training required such as Health and Safety, product knowledge development etc.
  • Also incorporating an awareness of the environment in terms of confidentiality, security, and health & safety.

What qualities do I need?

We’re looking for enthusiastic and self-motivated volunteers who have a few spare hours a week to commit to our great cause. Here are some other key skills we are looking out for:

  • Able to work on your own within boundaries
  • Good knowledge of furniture
  • A general interest in furniture and design is desirable
  • Knowledge of the main search engines
  • Capable of dealing with small DIY duties
  • Physically fit as lifting and moving of furniture will be involved
  • Good communication skills and customer relations
  • Be well presented, friendly and polite in a variety of situations.
  • Prepared to work as part of a team.
  • Good listening and communication skills.
  • Enjoy interacting with people
  • Enthusiastic, reliable and committed.
  • Open to learning, know your own limits of skills,
  • competences and responsibilities and work within them and know when to ask for help.

How much time do I need to commit?

We would ideally be looking for a minimum of 2-3 hours per week, but the role can be flexible around your lectures and other commitments; we can work together to find a time which best fits in with your lifestyle.

What are the benefits of volunteering with St Peter’s Hospice?

There are plenty of benefits to volunteering with us these include:

  • Experience working in a team and independently within a charity retail setting

  • Building links with your local Bristol community

  • The satisfaction of knowing the time you are giving means the hospice teams can continue to be there for our patients and their families when they need us most

  • The chance to build upon a passion for antiques, fashion, books, and music among other interests (there are all sorts of things donated to our shops!)

  • St Peter’s Hospice is a well established and respected charity in the Bristol area; it can be a real boost to a CV when applying for jobs in and around the city
