Read Easy – Helping Adults Learn to Read

You could help make a life changing difference to people in your community. Would you be interested in connecting adults who want to learn to read with volunteer reading coaches? This role is essential in supporting the work of the coaches helping people learn to read.

Overview

Read Easy provides free, confidential, one to-one reading coaching for adults who struggle to read. The role of coordinator is essential to support people learning to read (‘readers’) to meet up with their reading coaches and promote their learning journey. This is a rewarding role giving the opportunity to meet and work with people from a wide variety of backgrounds. Seeing a reader make progress with their coach is particularly gratifying.

Outline of the Coordinator Role

The coordinator is the first point of contact for those who want to learn to read ('readers'). Using a simple assessment, the coordinator will explain to a potential new reader how Read Easy may be able to help them.

The coordinator helps to interview new coaches and then pair them with the readers. They provide ongoing support to these reading pairs, maintaining support through regular calls with both reader and coach to check all is going well. If there is a problem they have the support of the literary specialists and any of the management team.  They meet regularly with other coordinators and benefit from their support.

Being a Read Easy Coordinator is very flexible and the time required for the role will vary on a weekly basis. (The actual amount of time required will be related to the number of reading pairs the coordinator is responsible for monitoring. Coordinators can take on up to 10 coach and reader pairs, about 10 hours a week, or smaller numbers depending on the time they have available.) The role provides lots of variety, is home-based and can work well around other commitments.

Coordinators need to have basic IT skills and be happy to use email and to log into the Read Easy Bristol Microsoft Office site. We have an IT supporter who can help any member of the team to access these.

Location:

The Bristol East Coordinator would cover coaches and readers living in areas to the east of Bristol, including Easton, Fishponds, Staple Hill, St George, Barton Hill, and Brislington. They will need to travel to meeting places in nearby cafes or libraries. As a certain amount of travelling is needed a car is useful but not essential.
