Why we need you

Out of School Clubs support autistic children and young people between the ages of 8 and 18 years.

At the Out of School clubs we create a safe environment where children and young people can learn social skills and learn how to manage unstructured times. We provide enough structure and support for children and young people to learn the necessary skills and reduce this over time.

What you will be doing

  • Help set up the session
  • Support young people in play, social and communication activities
  • Participate with children and young people as their ‘buddies’ where they can have someone to chat to and try activities with.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with the children and young people their parents / carers
  • Being part of a team with other staff and volunteers

Skills qualities and experience useful for the role (but not essential)

  • Positive
  • Patient
  • Stay calm under pressure
  • Flexible
  • Willingness to learn and adapt
  • Taking on instructions from the project leader
  • Being part of a team

When and where

  • Thursdays
  • 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm 8-13 year olds
  • 8:00 pm to 9:30 pm 13-18 year olds
  • Where:  Lockleaze
  • We would like you to volunteer for a minimum of 6 months as this provide consistency and stability to those who attend the group

Support

  • Volunteers are supported at all times by the Project Leader running the Out of School Club and receive regular supervision meetings.
  • Agreed expenses incurred due to the role are reimbursed.
  • Mandatory induction training includes Understanding Autism and Safeguarding Vulnerable Young People, ongoing training opportunities are also available.

What you could get out of it

  • Experience of volunteering with children and young people on the autism spectrum
  • A worthwhile opportunity to add to your CV
  • Making a real difference to the people at the club

We seek applications from anyone interested in the role, but particularly welcome applications from those on the autism spectrum.

Whilst we are able to make reasonable adjustments for volunteers you will need to be able to volunteer independently as we are not able to offer one to one support.

We process applications as we receive them, we will close the role when we find a suitable volunteer for the role. Consequently, the role may close before the advertised closing date.

When : Every week
