Hope Against Suicide is a volunteer-led mental health charity in Bristol offering emotional support to members of the community with mental health needs. Our goal is to inspire hope and deliver change for the community we work in. We run on-foot patrols (a bit like a 'walking helpline') and a stationary 'Listening Hub', that anyone can access and receive emotional support.

Are you passionate about supporting people with their mental health? Are you caring, compassionate and resilient, with excellent listening skills? Would you enjoy being a part of a friendly and diverse team of volunteers passionate about creating a zero-suicide society?

We are seeking compassionate and dedicated Mental Health Responders to join our team of Suicide Prevention Volunteers in Bristol.

In this role, you will provide emotional support to individuals within the community experiencing mental health challenges, listening with empathy and giving space for those who need to talk to freely express their thoughts and feelings.

Depending on your own preferences and availability, volunteering will either take place during on-foot patrol shifts around Bristol city centre, or inside our Listening Hub, which will be opening in July 2025 in the Arcade near Cabot Circus.

Responsibilities

  • Volunteer at least three hours per month (one shift every four weeks).
  • Confidently and effectively provide active listening, empathy and non-judgemental support to vulnerable individuals, many of whom may be part of the homeless community..
  • Commit to the role for a minimum of one year.
  • Attend training days and complete training as appropriate for the role.

Skills

  • Strong communication, active listening and empathy skills to effectively interact with service-users.
  • Be friendly and approachable, and confident speaking to vulnerable individuals from all walks of life.
  • Empathy, patience, and a genuine desire to help others.

We welcome volunteers from all walks of life, no matter age, gender, ethnicity, sexuality, religion or background. Please note that volunteering is always subject to a DBS check.
