Role Summary:
The role of a Host involves supporting Year 6 primary school visits by carrying out a range of tasks to ensure that their visit runs as smoothly as possible. This fun, rewarding, term-time role come with flexible hours, full training, plus we'll cover any out-of-pocket expenses.
Place of volunteering:
Lifeskills, 4th Floor, The CREATE Centre, Smeaton Road, Bristol. BS1 6XN
About Lifeskills:
Since January 2000, Lifeskills has provided safety education through a range of different programmes, including our Year 6 Children’s Programme.
Each year, schools are invited to bring their Year 6 pupils (age 10/11) for a guided tour around the safety centre, which is modelled as a realistic village. During the tour, children are presented with hazardous scenarios in a range of different settings, including a road, beach, dark alleyway, shop, homes, and a railway platform.
Supported by the Programme Co-ordinator, each session is covered by a Host and up to 15 Children's Tour Guides.
A highlight in the school calendar, Lifeskills provides an exciting, interactive, and memorable experience. We provide a safe environment, in which children learn about life's common dangers, and the education we provide supports the ‘Keeping Safe’ elements of the Personal, Health, Social, Economic curriculum (PHSE).
About the role:
As Host, you’ll meet and greet Year 6 primary school classes and provide a brief introductory talk. After putting children into their groups, you’ll remain with the teachers/parent helpers whilst the children take their tour.
You’ll run through a range of set tasks which includes helping the teachers/parent helpers to answer the (practise) emergency 999 phone calls being made by the children.
Once the tour is finished, you’ll provide a closing talk and escort everyone off-site, in the knowledge that the children are leaving Lifeskills knowing how to live much safer, healthier, more independent lives.
We provide full training, at your own pace. Each volunteering session lasts 21/2 hours and you’re free to volunteer as often as you wish (Monday – Friday during term time).
We provide:
- a choice of sessions (mornings 9:30am – 12:00pm, afternoons 12:30pm – 3:00pm, days 9:30am – 3:00pm)
- lunch (day volunteers only)
- a personalised training programme
- travel expenses
- Lifeskills uniform upon qualifying
- volunteer parties
- length of service awards
- development opportunities
Application process:
These are the steps to becoming a qualified Host. You’re under no obligation to move on to the next step and can withdraw at any time:
Step 1: Complete an hour-long taster session
Step 2: Experience the tour with a group (as an observer)
Step 3: Complete a school session with a Host
Step 4: Submit a volunteer application (including DBS) and complete your training. Once you are confident to work independently, and subject to a clear DBS check, you’ll be signed off as a qualified Host
