Alive is an award-winning charity dedicated to improving the quality of life of older people. We envision a world where older people live lives full of joy, meaning and connection.

Role title: Hoppiness Project Support Volunteer

Purpose of the role: Supporting elderly residents to engage at our monthly Hoppiness sessions at several care homes in Bristol.

You will help participants to engage in nature-based, multisensory activities and with each other, with the aim of improving their wellbeing in a holistic way (mentally, physically, cognitively, socially). We will grow hops and brew beer together - it will be lots of fun!

The project is a collaboration between the University of Bristol and Alive, and has received national attention last year (our guardian reel has had over 1million views!) See more info here: https://hoppiness.blogs.bristol.ac.uk/

What you will be doing:

  • Helping set up resources and materials for activities
  • Supporting participants socially and with nature- based activities (mostly centred around growing hops), reminiscence
  • Passing on any queries or issues to project leaders
  • Helping pack away at end of session

What you could get out of it:

  • Being part of a unique and innovative local project that has received national attention
  • The good feeling of making someone’s day better
  • Connecting with the local community and meeting other like-minded volunteers
  • Learning/improving your gardening and social skills
  • Learning more about dementia and other illnesses and disabilities - training opportunities in the field
  • Experiencing the benefits of therapeutic horticulture
  • A reference or job experience
  • A sense of pride from helping to make a difference

Locations and time:

Please get in touch to learn more about locations and times - sessions will take place during the work week.

Please note: We have more gardening support volunteering roles in other locations in and around Bristol available. Please get in touch for more info.
