What is an Events Volunteer?
Do you love talking to people and making them feel welcome? Like to get involved and enjoy helping others? Are you happy to work with people of all ages, from toddlers to older people. Do you feel that the cemetery should be an accessible community space where everyone can engage with the site in all sorts of ways? Then an events volunteer role might well be for you.
By getting involved, you could…
- Help young people enjoy and engage with the cemetery in a positive way

- Use your organisational skills to help with set and take down of events

- Make sure people feel welcome and directing them to different places

- Join an enthusiastic and varied team and making some new friends

- Experience volunteering at a variety of different tasks

- Help support our charitable cause

About us
Arnos Vale Cemetery Trust was formed in 2001 by Bristol City Council after they stepped in to compulsory purchase the cemetery after years of neglect. We have been running the cemetery since 2003 without any government support and need to fundraise to support our work.
Volunteers make it possible for us to continue enhancing this special place to share with the community. As a working cemetery, steeped in history with a busy programme of events, we have a high footfall of visitors with many different reasons for visiting.
What’s involved?
- Work alongside staff and other volunteers during our family activities and schools’ visits and potentially running events with other volunteers (after full training)

- Help with public commemoration events –making visitors welcome by handing out leaflets and making sure people know where to go.

- Support our community events through a range of tasks, wherever needed.

- There might occasionally be some other activities that are of interest to you, that we could use your help with.

- Sharing ideas and getting involved in planning

- You are important in making sure things run as smoothly and safely as possible – this includes getting to know health and safety and evacuation procedures and being aware of overall security.

- Assist with the practical side of public events and activities – set up/take down, parking, handing out leaflets, creating resources, cleaning and tidying up.

- Being part of a team that may need to adapt and change in response to local needs, Arnos Vale Cemetery Trust priorities or changes to government guidelines.
 - Assist with Forest School activities including fire, knife work, and tool use.

We want all our volunteers to feel welcome and to have an equally positive experience when volunteering with us. So, volunteers will:
- Be provided ongoing support from the staff team

- Be provided the necessary induction, training, equipment and reasonable adjustments to do this role well and safely.

This role will suit you if you…
- Friendly and keen to help people

- Flexible and enthusiastic

- Someone who likes being part of a team

- Well organised

- Not afraid to muck in

- Happy to work outdoors in the Underwood centre and the landscape

These events happen at various times of the day and week including weekdays in term time, school holidays, evenings, and weekends. You don’t need to be available at all times but being flexible about when you can support is useful.
All Arnos Vale Cemetery Trust volunteers will be asked to
- Respect and uphold the Arnos Vale Cemetery Trust values whilst volunteering with us, keeping to our charity values of compassion, conservation, collaboration and community.

- Complete training required of all volunteers and any role specific training.
 - Adhere to relevant policies and processes including safeguarding, health and safety, and equality and diversity.

You’ll also be entitled to discounts in our café and gift shop and, invited to social gatherings and free tours/events (free to attend weekly Classic Tour and other tours where space is available).
