We are very excited about this collaboration between Bristol City Council’s Community learning team and the Community Centre and and to be able to provide one of the most rewarding volunteering opportunity in Bristol. We are looking for community-focused volunteers who speak English to help run our English Conversation Club. They give people who don’t speak English as a first language a chance to practice in a relaxed, fun setting.

Hours: 1 hour. Wednesdays 1.30pm – 2.30pm. Plus training.

Minimum commitment: 4 months.

Expenses: This is a voluntary role and volunteer expenses will be covered (transport, lunch) in line with our policies.

Person Specification

  • Friendly and Approachable: Our volunteers have excellent interpersonal skills and enjoy interacting with people from diverse backgrounds in a welcoming and inclusive manner.
  • Commitment to Community: Our volunteers have passion for community engagement and a genuine interest in fostering connections within the local area.
  • Enthusiastic & Positive Attitude Working effectively within a team environment, our volunteers maintain a positive and proactive attitude, creating a welcoming atmosphere at our events.
  • Respect for Diversity: Our volunteers show respect for diverse perspectives, cultures, and identities, fostering an inclusive environment where all individuals feel valued and respected.
  • Language Proficiency: For this role, you will need to be able to confidently have day-to-day conversations with members of the public, although you don’t need any teaching experience.

Essential Tasks

  • Welcoming people to the English Conversation Club
  • Using games and strategies you will learn at training to encourage conversation among members
  • Help promote the English Conversation Club

 

Other Tasks

  • If interested and relevant, signpost attendees to other services at the community centre and beyond.
