Purpose of the role:
To inspire and engage visitors to the SS Great Britain by bringing the story of the
ship and her passengers to life in an interesting and relevant way.
Main activities:
As a Costumed Interpretation Volunteer you will represent one of the passengers or
crew of the SS Great Britain, or one of Brunel’s office staff. Whilst you wear Victorian
period costume you will interact with visitors as yourself. As a 21st century person
sharing stories of the past there are many ways in which you will bring history to life
including:
• Describing what daily life would have been like for the passengers and crew
travelling aboard the SS Great Britain or the staff working in Brunel’s Duke
Street office
• Describing the types of people who lived and worked aboard the SS Great
Britain, or who worked for Brunel’s engineering business
• Using handling objects to help visitors understand what life would have been
like for Victorians during the 19th Century
• Demonstrating historically appropriate activities and inviting visitors to join in
• Answering visitors’ questions and providing accurate information in a lively
and engaging way
