What is Befriending?

Our befriending service provides company and support to people affected by dementia who may sometimes feel lonely or find it hard to get out and about in their community. By volunteering as a befriender you can make a positive difference to someone’s day by helping them continue with activities they enjoy. The service is available weekdays, 9am-5pm.

Our volunteers

We’re looking for enthusiastic volunteers who want to meet new people, use their skills and develop new ones, whilst supporting people affected by dementia.

Each befriender will be carefully matched to the person they will be supporting, taking into account mutual interests. We ask our volunteer befrienders to make regular visits of about 1-3 hours weekly or fortnightly, for a minimum of one year, so that both of you get the most of this service.

Full training is provided before you start the role and our volunteers receive ongoing support from the befriending manager. This role does not provide personal care.

Why Volunteer as a Befriender?

This a very rewarding and enjoyable role where you will be able to share you interests and hobbies with a person with dementia and be able to directly see the positive impact you are making. You will receive full training and access to all of the Alzheimer's Society E-Learning modules and will develop skills in communication and working autonomously within Society policies and procedures.
