Can Do Bristol already demonstrating it’s ability to help Bristolians make a positive impact.

The platform recently helped Bristol City Council crowdsource 250 volunteers from around the city to become volunteer readers in 50 primary schools across Bristol. The ability to link people with such an opportunity has ensured that a number of children have had early reading intervention.

The reading program is delivered in partnership with the Bristol Reading in Schools Consortium (BRiSC) and NESTA Innovation Foundation and is part of Mayor Marvin Rees’ ambitious target of ensuring all children reach the National Standard for reading by the age of 11.

Sandra – a reading volunteer with RSVP (Retired and Senior Volunteer Programme) – said of the impact of the project:

“It gives me a great sense of satisfaction to see the children making progress. I also love it when children I have helped in earlier years still come up to say hello and tell me how they are doing. It is good to have the time to get to know children individually. They all like to read in their own way; some just want to read for pleasure, and some are keen to work their way through the reading scheme as quickly as possible. As a volunteer, I am able to follow their lead. I want them to feel important and I want them to enjoy having a bit of individual, and non - pressured, attention. In my experience all the children want to do well, and it is very gratifying to see them improving and knowing that I have helped in my own gentle way.”

The Bristol Reading in Schools Program is due to begin again for the new term with training and support offered. Training is already confirmed for:-

  • Greenway Centre - Friday 15th November (9.30-12.30)
  • City Hall - Friday 10th January (9.30-12.30)
