Since 2018 St Mary Redcliffe have been running community youth work programmes without any faith element. We run different activities in the local area for children and young people such as a youth group, football, homework club, a crafts group through which we reach around 80 local children and young people per week.
We also license a community building in the local area from Bristol City Council called the Redcliffe Community Hub (The Hub), which has acted as a lifeline of support for local residents of all ages through COVID. We offer a drop-in where people come with any problems, access to computers and internet, food support, discounts on activities (SS Great Britain, We The Curious etc.) and different classes for adults such as ESOL, driving theory and nutrition. Our work was recognised by Bristol City Council as we became the community anchor organisation for Redcliffe.
Redcliffe has high levels of child poverty (in the worst 1% in the country in 2019). The latest population estimates show that Redcliffe has a rapidly increasing child population (BCC, 2017) and the area lacks facilities for children and young people (Vivid, 2018; ERS, 2016). Children and young people living locally go to different primary and secondary schools outside of the area, which is a challenge in terms of building a local network.
