The Northern Slopes is a beautiful green space in Knowle, South Bristol with outstanding views of the city. The Slopes are full of wildlife including protected species, foxes, hedgehogs, butterflies and many rare species of wildflower. The Slopes are a space for everyone in the local community to enjoy and escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

The Northern Slopes Initiative is a group of volunteers seeking to maintain, conserve and enhance the Northern Slopes - sometimes called "The Guardians of the Slopes"! because that is exactly what we do.

Together as a team, we:
- Raise awareness of the value of the sites;
- Find out what people think of the Slopes and their future
- Encourage more people to use the Slopes
- Work with others to deliver improvements to the Slopes
- Raise funds to support our work.
- Stand up for the Slopes and the people and wildlife that use them when faced with development proposals
- Make sure that promises to improve the Slopes using monies from development on the Slopes - are actually delivered.

Project - Digitising The Slopes

Using aerial photograph images as a way of communicating with people – recording the local names for parts of the Slopes – and give details of locations and features in a number of formats.

The photographs should be able to be manipulated from a reference copy after everything has been done so that they can be altered in the future.

Examples of what is required includes adding the following information on each locations/feature to the photos:

  • Local Names
  • Postcodes (entrances only)
  • Descriptions using:
    • Ordinance Survey Six Figure Grid References
    • A GIS friendly description – eg: we can use the information to tie into GIS databases.
    • What3words – to help us talk to emergency services

Some work on Local Names has been done by hand – but needs to be digitalised.

Conversations with approximately 3 to 4 people and two drafts would be required.

It could be that you feel other features would be worth recording in this way. We are happy to hear what you think.

You will need access to aerial photography which you can manipulate to produce the end result; and access to websites/apps that can provide the locational information.

This work does not need access to the sites – but if you wanted to experience the features/entrances – that could be arranged.
