Volunteer opportunity description

Title: Reading Volunteer

Hours: 1 hour per week plus travel time to school + 1 training day
Reporting to: School Reading Recovery teacher
Location: All areas of Bristol
Expenses: Out-of-pocket expenses

Overview of the role

Volunteers will read with children from years 1, 2 and 3 (5, 6 and 7 year olds) who have fallen behind with their reading, improving their confidence and overall reading skills and encouraging a love of reading.

Key tasks and responsibilities

• Participate in initial training and induction
• Undertake a DBS check (this will be done free of charge)
• Undertake to be matched with an appropriate school and two pupils
• Read once a week with each pupil for a 10 week ‘block’
• Keep a record of reading performance for each child at each session (this will be explained during your training)
• Provide support, guidance and encouragement to the children
• Maintain confidentiality in accordance with agreed policy
• Participate in the evaluation of the programme if required

Requirements

• A commitment to supporting children with their reading
• Ability to communicate clearly
• Ability to work methodically through a set programme of activity
• Ability and willingness to complete project paperwork.
• Willingness to commit to volunteering for 12 weeks (including training)
• Willingness to participate in training day

ALL VOLUNTEERS WILL BE REQUIRED TO UNDERGO A POLICE CHECK (DBS) PRIOR TO READING IN ANY SCHOOL.

Training Available!

We provide training to support our volunteers and we've fixed some dates for the coming school year which are:

6th September 2019 - From 9:30 - 12:30 at the Southmead Development Trust - Greenway Centre.
